SCHOOLYEAR X MICROSOFT DENMARK
Secure Exams on Any Device
This session brings together Microsoft Denmark and Schoolyear, developer of the Safe Exam Workspace, to explore what modern exam infrastructure looks like in practice.
Higher education institutions in Denmark are under growing pressure to deliver digital exams that are secure, scalable, and resilient to emerging threats including AI-enabled academic misconduct.
Capacity constraints and the operational demands of running exams at scale are an increasing concern for IT teams, regardless of whether institutions run managed devices or are moving towards BYOD.
The underlying challenge is the same: maintaining exam integrity without creating burden for IT or friction for students.
Schoolyear is not an exam platform. It is the secure environment that sits around the assessment tools your institution already uses, such as WISEflow or Digital Eksamen, protecting exam integrity without replacing existing workflows.
In the Netherlands, where Schoolyear's Safe Exam Workspace is used by over 90% of higher education institutions, the sector worked through the same challenges. This session draws on that experience: what the problems were, how they were resolved, and what a large-scale implementation looks like in practice.
The session includes a short demo showing exactly how the Safe Exam Workspace works in practice, including secure access to applications such as Excel, SPSS, MATLAB, and coding tools for authentic exams.

What you will learn
Lessons from Dutch higher education
Practical lessons from Dutch higher education's shift to a a scalable approach to exam integrity, including what slowed adoption and what resolved it.
Why authentic assessments require a different infrastructure
How the demand for application-based exams, using tools students actually work with, changes what exam security needs to deliver.
What it looks like when it works
A concrete view of a secure exam with applications: how it deploys, what it locks down, and what the experience looks like for students and staff.
What is the Safe Exam Workspace?
The Safe Exam Workspace acts as the security layer around the exam and provides a uniform exam environment at scale.
It works together with exam platforms such as WISEflow, Digital Eksamen and Canvas, while also allowing students to safely use approved applications like Excel, SPSS or other required tools next to the exam.
IT departments can centrally manage the exam environment, access rules and permitted resources, while giving faculties and exam staff the flexibility to configure exams easily.
